A Reflection on Dante’s Inferno

Part 1

As I delve into The Inferno by Dante Alighieri this season, it’s not in honor of Halloween but as a reflection on profound spiritual truths. Studying English at Maryville University has greatly deepened my appreciation for ancient and medieval literature, especially works like Dante’s. I love immersing myself in the rich history and narratives that shaped the world. These courses have enriched my understanding of the timeless relevance of these texts and their connection to our present-day struggles with sin and redemption.

As a child, I didn’t fully understand the spiritual experiences I was having—seeing demons that others dismissed as figments of my imagination. Years later, after my encounter with The Truth, I now know why those experiences were real and spiritually significant. Dante’s journey through Hell in The Inferno mirrors many of the spiritual encounters that both my husband and I have had in recent years.

That being said, Hell is not an abstract concept; it is very real. As Ephesians 6:12 says, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness.”

Through a series of posts over the next few weeks, I’ll share insights on The Inferno and how it parallels our own spiritual battles. While Hell is a real place, there is hope in Jesus. As Romans 10:9 says, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.”

In the meantime I encourage you to please stay tuned and check back here on Monday for part 2 as we descend further into the depths of Hell.
