As a child, I thought Halloween was harmless fun — a night to dress up, eat candy, and laugh with friends. I never suspected that behind all the laughter lurked something dark, something that would leave an imprint on my soul for years to come.
Every single time I participated, it was the same story: two weeks of chaos and torment. Fourteen days of strange, unexplainable trouble — people fighting around me, confusion, anger, sickness, and emotional heaviness that felt impossible to shake.

I didn’t understand it back then. I was just a child trying to fit in. But my father noticed.
By the time I was twelve, he had seen enough. One night, he turned to my mother and said firmly, “That’s it. No more Halloween for her.” My dad wasn’t a man to speak lightly about spiritual things. Having experienced both the power of God’s healing and the darkness of this world, he recognized those “fun” celebrations for what they truly were — doorways to demonic influence.
Still, I was curious. For the next three years, I ignored that warning and continued to dress up and celebrate. But the same pattern followed — every single year — two weeks of torment.
Then, when I was fifteen, everything changed. That year, I had fully surrendered my life to Jesus Christ. I remember it clearly — I dressed up as a black cat and went out to celebrate one last time.
And the next day… all hell broke loose.

For two weeks, I endured the worst physical and spiritual torment I’d ever experienced. The candy I had collected made me violently ill, and something in my spirit told me this was not natural. That’s when it hit me like a lightning bolt — this wasn’t a coincidence. It was a consequence.
“Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.”
— Ephesians 5:11 (NIV)
That night, I fell to my knees and repented. I told the Lord that I would never again take part in anything that even remotely resembled the works of the enemy — and I meant it.
That was over thirty years ago, and I’ve never looked back.
Now, every year, I watch as others celebrate — dressing up, trick-or-treating, calling it “harmless fun.” But I also watch the pattern that follows: confusion, arguments, sickness, depression, and accidents that seem to come out of nowhere. They laugh it off as “bad luck,” but I know what it really is.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”
— John 10:10 (ESV)
When you participate in something rooted in death, you open the door to the one who rules over death. Halloween is not a child’s game — it is a spiritual contract. It’s an ancient pagan festival that celebrates the dead, honors demons, and glorifies fear — all things that God condemns.
My mother-in-law and husband, both ministers, later explained that the traditions of Halloween were never innocent. They stem from Samhain, a festival where people offered food to spirits and sought power from the dead — practices that God directly forbids.
“When you enter the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there… Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft… Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.”
— Deuteronomy 18:9–12 (N I V)
When we dress as witches, demons, or even “cute” monsters — we’re aligning ourselves, even unknowingly, with those same spiritual forces. We may think it’s pretend, but in the spiritual realm, we’re declaring allegiance.
And there’s no such thing as innocent allegiance to darkness.
“You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.”
— 1 Corinthians 10:21 (N – I – V)
When I stopped celebrating Halloween, the chaos in my life stopped too. The constant tension, the sickness, the fear — gone. In their place came peace, protection, and freedom that I still walk in today.
I am living proof that when you close the door to the enemy, God Himself steps in and guards your house.
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
— James 4:7 (KJV)
Enough Is Enough
If you are reading this and you’re tired of the same cycles — the anxiety, the nightmares, the unexplained chaos that seems to come around this season — maybe it’s time to take a stand. God isn’t asking for perfection; He’s asking for surrender.
Renounce the darkness. Refuse to participate in what grieves His Spirit. Choose to walk in the light — even if everyone else around you laughs.
“Therefore, come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.”
— 2 Corinthians 6:17 (KJV)
Christ has already won the victory. All that remains is for you to claim it. You don’t need to fear what happens when you reject the world’s traditions — because once you belong to Him, the darkness loses all power over you.
A Final Word
Friend, this isn’t about legalism — it’s about life and death. Halloween isn’t just a costume party. It’s a celebration of everything that stands against God. I’ve lived through the consequences of opening that door, and I can tell you firsthand: the devil gives nothing freely.
But Jesus? He gives peace. He gives freedom. He gives joy that no darkness can touch.
If you’re ready to walk in that same peace, all you have to do is turn your heart toward Him and say:
“Lord Jesus, I surrender my life to You. Forgive me for every door I’ve opened to the enemy. I renounce all darkness and choose Your light. Be my Savior, my Deliverer, and my Peace. In Jesus Name, Amen!”
And just like that — the light will break through.
