If you were raised where folks wave from their trucks, sweet tea is a love language, and silence is sacred—you might feel like a fish out of water in a big city. Trust me, I’ve been there. After growing up in the Appalachian mountains, landing in the middle of a bustling metropolis was like walking into another world. But I’ve found ways to make city life not only bearable—but meaningful. If you’re a small-town soul trying to survive (and thrive!) in the city, these survival hacks are for you.
🧭 1. Carry a Bit of “Home” with You
Whether it’s a favorite flannel shirt, a handmade quilt from grandma, or a jar of homemade jelly—keep something that grounds you. I’ve found that even the smallest comforts can anchor your heart when you feel overwhelmed.
🌿 2. Create a Quiet Space (No Matter How Small)
City life is noisy. Between traffic, sirens, and neighbors upstairs bowling at midnight, finding peace can be a challenge. That’s why I’ve carved out a corner in my apartment for prayer, journaling, and reflection. One candle, one Bible, one plant—and peace finds me again.

🥘 3. Cook Like You’re Still in the Country
Fast food may be on every corner, but your soul still craves nourishment. Cooking rustic, homemade meals keeps me connected to my roots. Don’t underestimate the power of biscuits and gravy when the city gets too loud.
🐾 4. Find the Familiar in Unfamiliar Places
Look for country comforts in your urban environment. A community garden, a local farmers’ market, a neighbor with chickens (yes, they exist in the city too!). You’ll be surprised at how many kindred spirits are out there.
🙏 5. Stay Spiritually Grounded
Being a Pentecostal in Manhattan—where most churches are Catholic, Protestant services are few and far between— so it hasn’t been easy. So I’ve created my own Sunday rhythm. I stream the church service from the one I grew up in back home, then spend time in the Word, followed by some deep, intercessory prayer later in the evening. It’s not the same as being there in person, but it’s how I stay connected to my faith in a city that rarely slows down.
💬 6. Talk Like a Neighbor (Even if No One Else Does)
I still say “yes ma’am” and “thank you kindly.” And guess what? It gets noticed. Kindness cuts through the noise. Just because no one else talks that way doesn’t mean you should stop. Be that warm voice—it matters more than you know.
🌆 Final Thoughts
You don’t have to give up your small-town soul to live in a big city. With a little intentionality and a lot of grace, you can carry the best of both worlds. Let your roots run deep—even when you’re surrounded by concrete. The city may never feel exactly like home, but it can still hold your heart.
