They’ve called me “cat girl,” “cat lady,” and even “the old cat woman”—which I take as a term of endearment, even though I’m not old, just seasoned (okay, maybe middle-aged). I’ve never had children of my own, though I’ve had the honor of helping to raise many others’ children over the years. But my passion—my lifelong joy—has always been animals. Growing up in the Appalachian mountains of Northeast Georgia, my childhood was a little wild (in the best way). My parents raised me around wolves, koi fish, and—of course—cats. I can’t remember a time I didn’t have at least one cat by my side. My dad, an animal lover himself, taught me so much about creatures great and small, and those memories now bring me healing.
So yes, I’ve raised my fair share of cats. And today, I want to share some fun facts and honest advice about a few cat breeds I’ve raised—so that maybe it can help you choose your next feline friend!
The Majestic Maine Coon
Big. Beautiful. Busy. These gentle giants are like the “dogs” of the cat world—affectionate and goofy, but don’t underestimate their strength. Maine Coons are one of the largest domestic cat breeds and can be a bit much for households with toddlers. They’re extremely active and crave engagement. If you don’t have time for play, this may not be the breed for you. They will climb, they will run, and they will talk to you (a lot!).
The Elegant Turkish Angora
Graceful and sweet, the Turkish Angora is a quiet soul. These cats thrive in calm, gentle homes. Loud noises, chaos, or constant visitors? Not their thing. If you’re seeking a one-on-one bond with a delicate and intuitive cat, this breed is perfect. But for families with young children? You may want to look elsewhere.
The Lovable Ultra Persian (Himalayan)
Now, if you’re looking for a breed that’s perfect for family life, this is your match. Ultra Persians (also called Himalayans) are as sweet as they are fluffy. Gentle, intelligent, cuddly, and surprisingly good with kids—especially if you want to teach your child some pet-care responsibility. These cats are calm and affectionate, and though they can play, they mostly just want to be near you.
Quick Coat Color Tip
Noticing a cat’s coat can tell you a lot. Solid-colored cats tend to be more even-tempered. Tabby cats (with stripes or spots) often have more intense, energetic personalities. So breed aside, coat can say a lot about temperament.
Personality Test for Cats? Yup.
Want to know if a cat is a good fit? Hold the cat at eye level and see if it looks away. That’s a good sign of submissiveness. Also, gently hold the cat above your head and slowly twirl—yes, really! If the cat doesn’t scratch or panic, that’s a calm and people-friendly cat, great for children and new pet owners. (Show judges do this all the time!)
Adopting from a Shelter? Follow the Same Rules
Even if the breed is unknown, the tests above can help you get a feel for a cat’s temperament. Trust your instincts—but give every cat a fair chance to show its heart.
The Mysterious Chantilly Tiffany Cat
Now this one’s special. Fourteen years ago, I found a stunning black kitten with silvery gray tips, long hair, and a unique, noble face under my mother-in-law’s barn. I had no idea back then that she was a Chantilly Tiffany—a now nearly extinct breed. If you ever find one, don’t hesitate! These cats are affectionate, loyal, trainable, silly, loving, and beautifully balanced between cat and dog-like traits. If you find one, consider joining the effort to bring this rare breed back. Register it with the American Cat Association, breed responsibly, and preserve a treasure that should never be lost to time.
In summary, whether it’s the high-energy Maine Coon, the quiet Turkish Angora, the family-friendly Ultra Persian, or a shelter mystery cat—you can find the perfect feline friend by knowing the breed traits and personality signs. And if you’re one of the lucky few to come across a Chantilly Tiffany, you’ve struck gold. Cats are more than pets—they are companions, healers, and, in my case, family.
