Don’t Trust Every Feeling — Learn to See Beyond

Our emotions can be powerful indicators, but they can also be deceptive. How many times have we “felt” like something was wrong, only to discover that our instincts were off? Or “felt” afraid of something that turned out to be harmless? Emotions are real, yes—but they don’t always speak truth. They are often rooted in trauma, anxiety, distraction, or simply the circumstances of a tough day. The Bible reminds us in Jeremiah 17:9, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” That’s a powerful warning not to lean too heavily on how we “feel” about something, but to look beyond and seek the truth that God reveals.

Scripture repeatedly calls us to walk by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). But that also means not walking by feeling alone. Circumstances can look bleak, relationships may feel strained, and your inner thoughts might scream “give up”—but that doesn’t mean that’s the truth. Feelings are fleeting, but God’s word and His promises remain steady. Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” Peace is found not in how we feel, but in where we focus.

When emotions try to hijack your sense of reality, I’ve found the best solution is to get alone with God. Put on worship music, block out the noise, and pray. Even five minutes of focused, intentional prayer can shift your entire perspective. If you say you don’t have time, let me gently say this: You will always make time for what matters most. And if prayer isn’t on that list, then don’t be surprised if you keep spinning your wheels in stress and defeat. Real victory comes from connecting with Jesus who holds all truth and peace.

Today, take a moment to ask yourself—“Am I letting my feelings guide me, or am I letting God’s truth lead the way? Life won’t always feel good, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t good. Be encouraged to step back, breathe, and ask the Lord to help you see things clearly. Don’t let your emotions sit in the driver’s seat of your life—invite Jesus to take the wheel.
