Finding Blessings Amid the Hardships

As I sit here in Manhattan, waiting once again while my husband undergoes another cancer treatment, I find myself reflecting deeply on the balance of hardships and blessings that have defined our lives. For 24 years, my husband Dexter and I have faced an unrelenting series of trials—his battles with cancer, my own health struggles, and the mental and spiritual toll of it all. It would be easy to dwell on the pain, but today I want to share a testimony of gratitude, resilience, and the blessings God has provided along the way.

The Bible tells us in John 16:33, “In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” This verse has become an anchor for me during the darkest seasons. Trouble is inevitable, but the promise of Jesus’ victory over every hardship has sustained me.

I have been blessed with a foundation built on the wisdom of strong spiritual mentors. My Granny Aleen taught me foundational biblical truths that continue to guide me. My Godparents, Norman and Myra, introduced me to the power of God’s Word and prayer, and their example inspired my walk with Christ.

My friend and prophetess Ann, who recently went to her eternal reward, was a source of immense encouragement to my marriage and our faith for over two decades. She prayed us through some of the hardest battles we’ve faced. My mother-in-law Wanda taught me the power of running to Jesus with every problem. Her advice has proven true time and again: when I cry out to Him, He hears me, and He moves swiftly to help.

I cannot forget my dear sister in the faith, prophetess Marilyn. After the tragic death of my own sister—a grief that nearly consumed me—it was Marilyn’s prayers and steadfast support that reminded me of God’s enduring presence. These individuals, now gone or continuing to stand beside me, have been blessings in the middle of my trials.

And then there’s Dexter, my beloved husband. Together we’ve faced “pure heck,” yet we’ve seen God’s faithfulness in the little blessings between the battles. Whether it’s a shared moment of laughter, an unexpected gift of peace, or simply the strength to endure another day, God’s hand has always been upon us.

Recently, my mother rented a condo for us by the ocean. As I watched the waves roll in, I was reminded of Psalm 23:2-3, “He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul.” The ocean has always been a place of restoration for me—a tangible reminder of God’s peace and power.

It is in the presence of the Prince of Peace that I find the strength to carry on. Though my life has been far from problem-free, the moments I spend in prayer, feeling His presence, are like those still waters. He guides me, comforts me, and reminds me that I am never alone.

Gratitude has been a key to my survival. As research shows, it improves mental strength and fosters resilience even in the most traumatic circumstances. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

By focusing on gratitude—thanking God for the people He has placed in my life and the moments of peace He provides—I’ve been able to endure what might otherwise feel unbearable.

If there is one thing I want you to take away from my story, it is this: Jesus Christ is real, and He longs for a personal relationship with you. He doesn’t promise a life free from trouble, but He promises to walk with you through it and to give you peace that the world cannot provide.

Jesus says in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” If you are struggling, I urge you to turn to Him. He will meet you where you are, guide you through the storms, and bless you in ways you cannot imagine.
