Thanksgiving From the Heart

Over the next few weeks, I invite you to join me on a journey through the history of Thanksgiving, not just from an American historical perspective but also from a biblical viewpoint. We’ll explore the origins of this beloved holiday, reflecting on how gratitude shaped early celebrations and how the Bible calls us to live with thankful hearts.

Historically, Thanksgiving is often traced back to 1621, when the Pilgrims celebrated their first successful harvest with the Wampanoag people. It was a moment of unity, survival, and giving thanks after a difficult winter. But gratitude, in a biblical sense, runs much deeper. The Bible reminds us that thankfulness should not be reserved for just one day, but should permeate our lives. As 1 Thessalonians 5:18 tells us, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Gratitude is an act of worship, a way to honor God in both good times and bad.

In our series, we’ll delve into how early American history and biblical teachings on gratitude intersect. From the trials of the Pilgrims to the ancient Psalms of praise, we’ll explore why thanksgiving should be a core aspect of our lives. Psalm 100:4 encourages us to “Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name.”

Join me every Monday night at 8 p.m. and Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. as we reflect on these themes and discuss the transformative power of gratitude. Together, we’ll learn how to cultivate thankful hearts, not just during this season, but every day of our lives.
