Taking a Break and Considering the Ecological Impact After the Hurricane

As I sit by a riverside in South Georgia today, surrounded by nature, I can’t help but reflect on the unseen damage that Hurricane Helene has caused—not just to people, but to the environment as well. While watching videos of people rescuing pets and livestock from roofs that once protected homes, and mothers crying over unimaginable losses, I’ve come here to observe what impact the storm has had on our local ecosystem.

The most immediate signs of destruction are hard to miss. The riverbanks, once stable and a favorite spot for hikers, have been severely eroded, making paths treacherous and causing lasting damage to the natural landscape. What’s more troubling is the silence in the air. The usual sounds of birds calling and chirping are eerily absent. It has me wondering—where did the birds go? Hurricanes can have a drastic impact on bird populations. Many birds are swept away by the winds or displaced from their natural habitats. Migratory birds may be forced off course, while local species could face the loss of nests, food sources, and shelter.

Aside from the silence of the birds, I have come across fascinating geological finds today, despite the somber tone of the environment. Among them, ferruginous quartz—a beautiful rust-colored rock washed ashore by the storm. I also found numerous freshwater clam shells and the decaying remains of snails, which may be contributing to the foul stench that now permeates the air.

Even in the face of such devastation, today has reminded me of nature’s resilience. While we’re focused on the damage done to our homes and communities, let’s not forget to take stock of how the environment, too, has been affected. Nature, like people, has an incredible way of bouncing back, but it will take time—and perhaps, a little care from us—to help it along. Together let’s be God’s helping hands for all of creation during this time of need.
