Caring for Creation: The Role of Environmental Art

The Beckoning by Amanda Sherrell

In a world increasingly aware of environmental issues, environmental art has emerged as a powerful medium to advocate for the protection of our planet. While I wouldn’t call myself an environmentalist, I hold a deep respect and care for all of God’s creatures and creation. This respect is rooted in my faith and guided by scripture.

Environmental Art: A Creative Call to Action

Environmental art goes beyond aesthetic beauty; it communicates the urgency of ecological preservation and the interdependence of all life forms. Artists working in this genre use natural materials, create site-specific installations, and often engage with ecological processes. Their works serve as poignant reminders of the fragility of our environment and our responsibility to protect it.

Biblical Foundations for Protecting Creation

As someone who values scripture, I find compelling reasons within the Bible to support the preservation of our environment:

  1. Genesis 1:28-30 – In the creation story, God commands humans to “fill the earth and subdue it.” However, this dominion implies stewardship, not exploitation. We are entrusted to care for God’s creation responsibly.
  2. Psalm 24:1 – “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” This verse reminds us that the earth belongs to God, and we are merely caretakers of His creation.
  3. Genesis 2:15 – “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” This mandate to tend and keep the Garden signifies our duty to maintain the health and beauty of the world.
  4. Matthew 6:26 – “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?” This passage highlights God’s provision for all creatures, underscoring the importance of every part of creation.
Personal Reflections on Environmental Art
Vincent Van Gogh

Although my artistic journey is not primarily focused on environmental themes, I deeply appreciate the work of those who use their creativity to advocate for ecological awareness. I am particularly drawn to the way environmental art can convey a sense of peace and harmony amidst the chaos of everyday life. This aligns with my own experiences and the solace I find in God’s creation.

My recent drawing of the Abyssinian Cat, titled “Abyssinian’s Abyss,” embodies a similar tranquility. It symbolizes how moments of calm and beauty can be found even in what seems like an abyss. This perspective is crucial, especially in our fast-paced world.

Conclusion: Embracing Our Role as Stewards

Environmental art serves as a vivid reminder of our responsibility to protect the planet. It bridges the gap between ecological consciousness and creative expression, inviting us all to consider our role in caring for God’s creation. By supporting and appreciating environmental art, we not only celebrate artistic talent but also reaffirm our commitment to stewardship.

If this resonates with you, I encourage you to explore more about environmental art and perhaps support artists who dedicate their work to this important cause. Let’s cherish and protect the beauty of our world, honoring the divine command to care for all living things.
