Recently, my husband Dexter and I took a trip to Manhattan to visit Sotheby’s, where they were showcasing an exhibition featuring memorabilia from the NBA’s Lakers and Mavericks. It was a departure from the usual art displays I tend to gravitate towards, but it turned out to be a refreshing and enjoyable experience.

The exhibition was a sports enthusiast’s dream, filled with iconic pieces of NBA history. Among the highlights were the Lakers’ 2001 World Champions banner, Kobe Bryant’s locker, Jayson Tatum’s jersey, and Michael Jordan’s ‘final game’ shorts. Dexter, being an avid sports fan, felt right at home. His excitement was palpable as he explored the various exhibits, reminiscing about memorable games and legendary players.

While my initial hope was to see some Van Gogh or Andy Warhol pieces, I found the change of pace quite invigorating. The sports memorabilia offered a different kind of artistry, one that celebrates athletic achievements and the passion of the game. Seeing Dexter so engaged and happy made the visit all the more special for me.

After soaking in the exhibition, Dexter treated me to a delicious meal at the elegant Sant Ambroeus restaurant within Sotheby’s. We enjoyed a flavorful egg frittata and some hot tea, which was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on our day. The ambiance of the restaurant, coupled with the delightful meal, made for a truly memorable experience.

All in all, our visit to Sotheby’s was wonderful. It was a great reminder that art and enjoyment can be found in various forms, whether it’s traditional paintings or sports memorabilia. It was also a joy to see Dexter so immersed in something he loves, making the trip even more worthwhile.
