Last week, I shared with you one of my deepest passions: rescuing abandoned kittens in the rural area near my home. Today, I write with a heavy heart as I bring attention to a growing concern affecting many of us in the southern United States. It’s becoming increasingly clear that a lack of Humane Societies, combined with soaring costs of pet care and food, is creating a troubling situation akin to an economic downturn for pet owners. Families are being forced into agonizing choices between feeding themselves or their beloved pets.

Even in my own pet food manufacturing and retail businesses, I’ve witnessed firsthand the exorbitant costs involved. Unfortunately, it’s the innocent animals like Dixie, a sweet kitten abandoned behind one of our warehouses, who bear the brunt of these challenges. Found severely dehydrated at just four weeks old, Dixie’s survival hung in the balance.

Thankfully, my background in animal CPR and emergency management allowed me to intervene swiftly with IV fluids. The first 48 hours were touch and go, but I’m overjoyed to report that Dixie has shown remarkable resilience in recent days. She’s now eating on her own and thriving in a safe, air-conditioned environment filled with toys and playmates until she’s ready for adoption.

However, Dixie’s journey to full recovery isn’t complete. She still needs vaccinations, deworming, and to be spayed, which amounts to approximately $150 USD.
