Recently, I completed a painting that holds deep personal meaning for me. It depicts a watery oasis amidst a desert landscape, illuminated by the glow of stars and a bright moon reflecting on troubled waters. In this solitary oasis stands a juniper tree, symbolizing my own journey through grief and healing.
I’ve titled this painting “Oceans” because it resonates with a period in my life marked by profound loss. Six years ago, I tragically lost my sister to an overdose. In the aftermath, I felt like I was wandering aimlessly in a desert of despair, longing for the solace and renewal that only the ocean’s depths could provide. The juniper tree, isolated on the edge of the canvas, represents my sense of being lost and yearning for spiritual guidance and healing.
It took me four long years to begin finding peace. With God’s help and through countless visits to my favorite secluded beach, I slowly started to heal. Often, I would wade into the ocean’s embrace in the dead of night, blindfolded, seeking to connect with something beyond the overwhelming grief.
The process of creating “Oceans” was cathartic. It allowed me to express emotions that words couldn’t capture. Art has a remarkable ability to reflect life’s complexities and depths. It serves as a mirror to our experiences, allowing us to explore and understand our innermost thoughts and feelings.
In the midst of my healing journey, several Bible verses provided comfort and strength:
Psalm 34:18 (NIV) – “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Isaiah 41:10 (NIV) – “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Psalm 30:5b (NIV) – “Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.”
These verses became my anchors during moments of despair, reminding me of God’s presence and His promise of healing. Just as the moon’s reflection on troubled waters in my painting symbolizes hope amidst turmoil, these verses illuminated my path toward healing and restoration.
Through “Oceans” and my journey, I’ve learned that art not only mirrors life’s challenges but also embodies our resilience and capacity for transformation. It serves as a testament to the power of faith, love, and the healing journey we embark on with God by our side.
